The Central Salmon River is in a beautiful area near Zigzag… and is easily accessed unlike some hikes that require driving on multiple forest service roads that wind and twist on one lane up and through the mountains.

The Eagle Creek trail was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The trail is beside Eagle Creek, and has several waterfalls.

The Trail of 10 Falls at Silver Falls State Park has three waterfalls that you can walk behind. We hiked the Canyon Trail and the Rim Trail.

The McNeil Point shelter is at about 6,100 ft. at the timberline at the base of Mount Hood.

Larch Mountain, an old volcano that last erupted over four million years ago, is a prominent high spot in the Columbia River Gorge that you can drive to in the summer and fall months and then hike in a loop with lots of options to go farther if you want.

At the summit of Hamilton Mountain, there are great views of Mount Adams and the western Columbia River Gorge.

It was a very overcast, cloudy day for this hike, so we didn’t get the great views of Mount Hood that we saw last July when we did the same hike, however, being in the clouds has a different kind of appeal.
