Photos from our camping and hiking trip with friends to the Painted Hills and Sheep Rock Units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. We camped at the Ochoco Divide campground and got up early on a Saturday morning to see the Painted Hills at sunrise, then drove to the Sheep Rock unit about an hour farther east. The Thomas Condon Paleontology Center has interpretive displays that highlight the area’s wildlife and geological history. We did a 3.25 mile hike at the Blue Basin, with blue-green rock formations and expansive views. After our hike, we headed back to the Painted Hills for sunset.
